Joseph Zakowski Obituary

South Bend - Joseph A Zakowski, 84, passed away at 2:50 a.m. Monday, October 3, 2016 at Memorial Hospital. He was born on February, 20, 1932 in South Bend to Teofil (Jack) and Pearl (Sobieralski) Zakowski. He graduated from Riley High School in 1950, and was a U.S Army Veteran who served in the Korean War. On December 3, 1960 he married Margaret Sokol, who survives. He worked for Martin Machine Company for 25 years, and retired from Aquarius in 1997. Joe is also survived by four children, Mark (Becky) Zakowski and Kenneth (Patricia) Zakowski of South Bend, Karen Higgs of Brownsburg, and Michael Zakowski of Sonoma, CA; a brother Robert (Elizabeth) of Chandler AZ: six grandchildren Rebecca Zakowski, Maura Higgs, Connor Zakowski, Sarah Zakowski, Clare Higgs, and Zachary Zakowski, and several nieces and nephews. His brother Thadeus preceded him in death. Joe was an avid trap shooter, fisherman, and he enjoyed making wine. He will be missed by his devoted wife and family. Visitation will be from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. Thursday, October 13 at Zahoran Funeral Home, 1826 Kemble Avenue. A funeral service will be held on Friday, October 14 at 11:00 a.m. at Zahorans, with cremation to follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Indiana Youth Trapshooting program, c/o: Mr. William Radwan, 232 Sycamore Lane, Munster, Indiana 46321, or the charity of the donors choice.
