Joseph L. "Nagypapa" Horvath, 80, passed away at 6:45am Sunday, June 4, 2017 in his residence. Joe was born on February 17, 1937 in Szkesfehrvr, Hungary. He immigrated to South Bend in January 1957 and retired as a tool and die designer from United Tool and Engineering. Surviving are his wife of almost 50 years EnikÅ', son ElÅ'd, daughters Angla (Matthew) Beem and Tnde (Christopher) Keslin and four grandchildren Sophia, Alexys, Sydney, and Lucas. Joe was preceded in death by his parents and six siblings. Joe was an avid soccer enthusiast as a player, a referee, and a fan. He officiated numerous games for area high schools and colleges. He had a penchant for improvising recipes, particularly when making palacsinta. He also enjoyed fishing, watching his vegetables grow, chopping trees, his daily sudoku and most of all, his adoring grandkids. Funeral services will be celebrated at 5:00pm Friday in the Zahoran Funeral Home, 1826 Kemble Avenue. Friends may gather from 3-5 Friday in the funeral home. Burial of his cremated remains will take place at 11:00am Saturday in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Our Lady of Hungary Church or the Center for Hospice Care.
