Anthony M. Mersits

Anthony (Tony) M. Mersits, 88, passed away Saturday, January 13, 2024 in his residence.

Tony was born on April 19, 1935 in South Bend to Anton and Theresa (Tustich) Mersits.  On September 2, 1957 in South Bend he married the former Helen Radich who survives along with a daughter Anita (John Carpenter) McCombs, a son John Mersits, three grandchildren Katelyn Mersits, Meredith Mersits and Joseph (Lindsey) McCombs, daughter-in-law Melissa Mersits, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Tony was preceded in death by a son Anthony M. Mersits II, a grandson Kevin J. McCombs, son-in-law William J. .McCombs and a sister Pauline Menyhart.

Tony graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1952 and the University of Notre Dame in 1956 with a B.B.A. in Business and Finance.

Mersits Grocery was a family business which he successfully ran for 25 years after his father retired. He later worked as an investment broker with Resources Planning Group. Tony was a veteran of the United States Army, a member of the former St. Anthony Society where he bowled for many years, the Moose Lodge and Holy Cross Parish. He enjoyed watching sports especially when his grandchildren were involved.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00am Friday, January 19, 2024 at Holy Cross Catholic Church. Entombment will follow in Riverview Cemetery.  Viewing will take place from 4:00-8:00pm Thursday, January 18, 2024 in the Zahoran Funeral Home, 1826 Kemble Avenue where a rosary will be recited at 5:00pm.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer Association.
