It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Gale William Chapman, lovingly known as “Bill,” who departed from this world after a life full of adventure, joy, and kindness. Bill passed away peacefully from old age, surrounded by his family in Bloomington, IN on Oct 29th.
Bill shared a great love with his wife, Mitzie, to whom he was married for 53 wonderful years. Together, they built a legacy of devotion, laughter, and family. He was a father of four children and a grandfather of nine.
Bill’s adventurous spirit was legendary. Whether sailing the seas or flying high above the clouds, he lived for the thrill of exploration and the peace of open horizons. His children share his adventurous spirit because of the many experiences he created for them very early on. He was known to teach them to drive and solo sail before they were teens, and fly airplanes with telephone books as boosters to see over the instrument panel.
But no matter where his travels took him, Bill never met a stranger. His warmth and genuine interest in others made friends of all he met, no matter their background or walk of life. Those who knew Bill will remember his contagious laugh and the way he wore his heart on his sleeve.
A natural entertainer, he captivated countless gatherings with his storytelling and humor. He shared generously, not only with his laughter but also with his compassion. Bill was always the first to lend a hand, offering his time and resources to those in need. He delighted in sharing a drink with friends and family, filling every toast with heartfelt connection.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the staff of Bell Trace Nursing Facility who cared for Bill so lovingly in the last year of his life.
Funeral services will be held on Monday November, 4th in South Bend, IN at St. Peter and Paul Serbian Orthodox Church. Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM with services at 11:00.
To honor Bill’s memory, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s association, at ALZ.org. Please note, “In memory of Gale William Chapman” with your donation.
