George A. Mayerhofer, 97, passed away at 12:15pm Friday, October 14, 2016 in his residence. George was born on February 8, 1919 in South Bend to George and Wilhemina (Diettrich) Mayerhofer. He was a World War II Army-Air Force veteran who retired in 1981 from the United States Postal Service. George was a 75 years member of the National Association of Letter Carriers where he was a Past President. He also was a 70 year member of the DFV German Club serving as a Past President and Financial Secretary, as well as being a charter member of St. Anthony de Padua Church. On December 26, 1969 he married the former Ruth Wukowich. She died on July 26, 2012. George was also preceded in death by a son Ivan Mayerhofer, a step-son Roger Greene and 2 sisters Elizabeth Weisser and Mary Elizabeth Mayhofer. Surviving are 3 daughters Rose Ellen (William) Cabanaw of Osceola, Cynthia Artusi and Veronica Schimmel both of Mishawaka, a step-daughter Karen Reed of South Bend, 4 grandchildren Richard Artusi, Brian Artusi, Mike Schimmel and Ashley Schimmel, 5 step-grandchildren Leslye Cordoza, Heidi Pack, Daniel Greene, Brian Greene, and Taylor Greene, 6 great-grandchildren Graydon, Grace, Melina, Gavin, Blaine, and Addison, 5 step-great-grandchildren Blake, Brandon, Tristyn, Logan, and Laine and 3 step-great-great-grandchildren Christopher, Amara, and Katlye. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:30pm Tuesday, October 18, 2016 in St. Anthony de Padua Church. Entombment will follow in Riverview Cemetery. Family and friends may from 4-8 Monday in the Zahoran Funeral Home, 1826 Kemble Avenue. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to The Center for Hospice Care.
