James Campbell Jr. Obituary

James “Jim” P. Campbell, Jr., 72, of South Bend, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 28, 2025, at 10:50 a.m. in Memorial Hospital, surrounded by the love of his family.

Born on January 27, 1953, in South Bend to James and Barbara (Samuels) Campbell Sr., Jim lived a life defined by service, loyalty, and a contagious enthusiasm that touched everyone who knew him. He dedicated 27 years to the South Bend Police Department, beginning his career as a patrol officer before becoming a highly decorated detective. After retirement Jim joined a regional cold case task force - a role that truly encapsulated his tireless dedication to his community and relentless pursuit of justice.

Jim’s distinguished career in public service was matched only by his love for life. He was a proud elder of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of the Chippewa Indians, an active member of the South Bend Elks Club #235 and a member of the German Club Golf League.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Jim was the heartbeat of his family and a friend to all. A lifelong sports fan, Jim cheered passionately for Notre Dame and the Chicago White Sox.  He was known for his infectious energy, bright smile, and the way he could light up any room he entered. He had a true gift for connecting with people—whether through sharing stories from his detective days, cheering on his favorite teams, or singing his heart out at karaoke (which he loved as much as he loved making others laugh). Music and entertainment were central to who he was, and he found joy in bringing joy to others. To know Jim was to love him—and to be reminded to live life with the same energy and passion he did every single day.

On October 10, 2008, Jim married the love of his life, Cristal (Young) Campbell, who survives him. His greatest pride was his family: daughter Kelly Porter; sons Eric (Rebecca) Campbell, Mike (Taylor) Campbell, Mac (Ashley) Anderson, Seth (Jessica) Anglemyer, and Wilson Anglemyer; 12 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Jayme Willemin, his brother Andy Campbell, and many beloved nieces and nephews—Michelle, Tina, Desiree, John Steven, Mary, Sarah, Lizbeth, Aaron and Andrea.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his paternal grandmother, Mary Campbell; his sister, Debra Cygert; and his brother, Leslie Payne.

Jim’s life will be celebrated on Sunday, August 10, 2025, during a Celebration of Life with family and friends at the South Bend Elks Lodge #235, 3535 W. McKinley Avenue, South Bend, IN 46615 from 12:30 pm to 3:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation:
