James Gruber Obituary

James Gruber, 84, passed away at 3:13 pm on Saturday, June 29, 2024, in Cambridge, WI, with family by his side. He was born to John and Anne Gruber in South Bend, IN, on April 20, 1940.  They preceded him in death, along with his two brothers, John and Bob.

Jim grew up in the grocery industry and was so proud to be a part of the family business, Gruber’s Supermarket. Jim and his parents and brothers dedicated much of their early years working in the Prairie Avenue store. Jim owned and operated the 7 J’s Tavern (Simeri’s) and North Liberty-based Jim’s Friendly Market. Jim was certified with Farmers Insurance Group and proudly served his northern Indiana customers for nearly 25 years.

Jim graduated from St. Joseph High School in 1958. He played football during and after high school with a few of his best friends, whom he remained close to until his death.  On September 7th, 1964, Jim married Jacqueline (Synder) and raised five children- Jim, Jill, Joe Jay, and Jeff (hence the 7 J’s name for the tavern).  Jim’s 17 grandchildren brought him and Jackie much joy in their loving marriage.

Jim found pleasure in hard work– a freshly fallen tree and wood splitting station was one of his “happy” places. He enjoyed mowing, car cleaning, fence mending, home remodels, or whatever else would keep him active and outdoors. Jim loved taking his young family with their horses to the St. Joe County Fair for western competition. He enjoyed camping and was a good salesperson, having convinced his wife Jackie to enjoy it too!  Jim supported his children in sports into and through college for some.  Later in life, Jim picked up running and even ran a full marathon at the age of 60! Although his golfing buddies would say otherwise, Jim learned to play and enjoy the game of golf. Jim enjoyed his friend group and the adventures they shared.  After retirement, Jim devoted time to Kiwanis, Reins of Life, and St. Adalbert’s Soup Kitchen.

Jim's positive attitude and resilience were truly inspiring. A devout Catholic, he practiced humility and gratitude, instilling these values in his children and grandchildren. His contagious laugh and comforting presence made people feel at ease.  In the fall of 2020, Jim and Jackie moved from South Bend to Cambridge, WI, to be closer to their favorite(only)daughter, Jill.  Jim’s life was an adventure, and his 'one day at a time' logic never wavered.  He will be missed by many, but his spirit of resilience and positivity will continue to inspire.
