Josef Wieczorek was born in Nieder-Pomsdorf, Ortsteil Herbsdorf, Germany on January 16,1939, to Josef and Martha Wieczorek. He had two sisters, Eva (Ludwig) Dietrich and Gisela (Wilhelm) Eckhardt, and two brothers, Paul Wieczorek and Alois Wieczorek.
Josef received his electrical engineering degree in Konstanz, Baden-Württemberg. He then went to Uganda in 1963 to work for White Fathers Missionaries and Holy Cross Missionaries, being an instructor and principal of Saint Joseph’s Technical School. He lived there for a total of 8 years. This is also where he met a nurse, Linda Lane, of South Bend, IN. She was the first person he saw when he was suffering from malaria for three days and she offered him a tomato sandwich.
He came to South Bend, IN to marry her in 1971. Josef worked for Koontz-Wagner for 5 years. Then he went on to work for AEP as an electrical engineer for 24 years.
Josef was a devoted husband who took care of his wife for over 20 years. He was always positive and had a great sense of humor, always having a joke on the ready to make a crowd laugh. He loved Notre Dame football games, being a devout Catholic and going to St. Matthews Cathedral, crossword puzzles, cooking and watching cooking shows, Columbo and James Bond, musicals, and he loved to sing, being involved in choir at St. Matthews as baritone.
Josef is survived by his three children, Heidemarie Wieczorek, Jeffrey Wieczorek, and Juliana (George) Paustian, two granddaughters, Juliet and Josefine, and many nieces and nephews in Germany. His wife Linda passed away on January 11, 2021.
Being a faithful servant of God, Josef entered in eternal life peacefully with his immediate family close. Dad, you will be greatly missed.
Cremation has taken place. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00am Friday, March 7, 2025 in St. Matthew Cathedral. Family and friends may gather from 10:30 until services in the church. Burial of his cremated remains will take place at a later date in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.
