Joseph A Verash, 96, passed away Monday, January 4th at 11:58 am, at Memorial Hospital. He was born March 1, 1924, and lived in South Bend his entire life.The oldest of 3 brothers, Joseph signed up with the Army for WWII. He scouted areas, before the Battalions would move to that area. At that time, Joseph was the only family member to join the Military. Later on, his Brothers Nickolas, and Laslo, would join, plus his Father. Those 3 would lose their life during the War. His Mother Agnes, got a petition, to bring Joseph back to the United States, as he was the last remaining Verash. He declined to return, vowing to remain with his Battalion until the War ended. After the War, Joseph Married Fern Kobold, on June 25, 1946. They had 3 sons, Larry, Lewis, and Ronald. Joseph worked for the Railroad for 20 years. After a short time at South Bend Foundry, Joseph worked at General Telephone for 30 years. He retired in 1996. During his Retirement, Joseph took in stray animals, Dogs and Cats, and cared for them like one of his kids. In addition to his Brothers, Joseph had a Sister, Helen. She passed away in 2007. His wife Fern passed away in 2003. Surviving are sons, Larry, Lewis {Sharon}, and Ronald {Rhonda}. Grandchildren Kris, Katrina, Kyle, Amanda, Courtney, Rhiannon, and Karly. And 14 Great Grandchildren. His Daughter in law, Sue Verash, passed away in 2010. Viewing will take place from 2-4 Saturday in the Zahoran Funeral Home, 1826 Kemble Avenue. Services will follow at 4:00pm. Masks are required and social distancing guidelines will be enforced. Viewing is possible through our webcast.
