Kathleen C. (Szalay) Scheu

Kathleen “Kathy” Christine (Szalay) Scheu, 79, passed away peacefully Thursday, May 2, 2024 at Memorial Hospital in South Bend, following a brief illness.

Kathy was born on December 5, 1944 in South Bend to the late Paul J. “Baldy” and Christine T.  (Wieger) Szalay. The middle of three daughters, Kathy was preceded in death by the oldest sister Paulette Marie Szalay. Her sister and best friend, Mary Elizabeth (Dave) Horvath, survives along with many other loving relatives. 

On August 31, 1968, Kathy married the love of her life John D. Scheu. They were able to celebrate 37 years of marriage before his passing in 2006. The couple were blessed with two sons: John Paul (Tina) Scheu of Elkhart, IN and Nicholas (Molly) Scheu of Westfield, IN. Kathy was incredibly proud of her sons. She also adored her five grandsons: John Preston, Hunter, Nolan, Will, and Jake.  She was preceded in death by an infant granddaughter, Christine Marie. Kathy, affectionately known as “Mimi”, enjoyed spending time with her grandsons and loved hearing of all their accomplishments.

Kathy graduated from St Joseph High School in 1962. Following graduation, she attended Holy Cross School of Nursing and completed her degree in 1965. Years later, she returned to school achieving her Bachelors of Science Degree in Nursing from St. Francis College. She spent 50 years as a skilled and dedicated nurse enriching  the lives of people in the community.

Kathy truly cherished her family and friends, was a compassionate and skilled care giver, a woman of faith, and a loyal friend. She will be greatly missed by all.

Visitation will take place Wednesday, May 15, 2024, from 10:00 am to 11:30 am at Our Lady of Hungary Catholic Church, 829 Calvert Street, South Bend, IN, followed by the Mass of Christian Burial. Immediately after, burial will follow at Highland Cemetery where Kathy will be laid to rest next to her loving husband, John. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mishawaka Marian High School (indicating Kathy Scheu in the memo) or Our Lady of Hungary Catholic Church.
