Sylvester “Sal” Gerschoffer, 96, passed away Tuesday, February 17, 2026 in Cedarhurst Senior Living surrounded by his family.
Sylvester was born on December 15, 1929 in South Bend to George and Lillian (Hojara) Gerschoffer. They preceded him in death along with a sister Virginia (Edward) Kusmierz, a brother Ervin (Gladys) Gerschoffer and granddaughter Nicole.
On June 26, 1954 he married the former Christine Tobolski who survives. Also surviving are two daughters Cynthia (Joseph) Samulis and Juliet (Robert) Frazier, two sons Eric (Stephanie) Gerschoffer and Jarrod (Anna) Gerschoffer, 6 grandchildren Samantha (John), Adam, Joelle (Cole), Rachael, Vivian, and Sophia.
Sal retired from Torrington after 30 years of service and was also employed by Steel Warehouse. He was a veteran of the Korean War serving in the United States Army and was a member of the Calvert Rod & Gun Club, the Rum Village Neighborhood Assoc.(member & President) American Legion Post 357, the Loyal Order of Moose and Fraternal Order of Eagles. He also had many submissions to the South Bend Tribune’s Voice of the People and was a avid Notre Dame fan and ushered for 27 years for football.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30am Friday, February 20, 2026 in St. Pius X Catholic Church. A viewing will be held 1 hour prior in the church. Burial with military services will follow in Highland Cemetery. Zahoran Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements.
