Thomas G. Hinkle, Sr., 69, passed away in his home on July 8, 2016 surrounded by his family after a long battle with cancer. He leaves his wife of 48 years, Sandy (Niemann) Hinkle; two sons, Jeffrey (Brenda) of South Bend, IN; Thomas Jr. (Melinda) of New Paris, IN; nine grandchildren, Alex (Maddy) Lascano, Andrew Lascano, Patrick Dunkin, Alaina Dunkin, Matthew, Isabella, Julianna, Isaac, and Lyla Hinkle; one great-grandchild, Olivia Lascano; and many close friends. He was born on June 20, 1947 in South Bend, IN to the late Frances (Perneker) Hinkle and William Hinkle, he was a lifelong resident of South Bend. On March 16, 1968, Tom married Sandra Jean Niemann at Our Lady of Hungary Church. After graduating from St. Joe High School in 1965, Tom served in the U.S. Army Reserve for six years during the Vietnam War. He was a member of UAW Local 5 and worked at AM General for 35 years, retiring in 1999 at the age of 52. Tom was a member of DFV German Club and St. Anthonys Mens Society where he played softball and was given the name "Legend" for his gifted skills and abilities on the field. He loved watching Notre Dame football, fishing, bowling, and his annual golf trips with friends and family. Tom was a talented woodworker and craftsman, spending many hours building cabinets, playhouses, decks, etc. The family would like to thank the wonderful nurses at Memorial Hospital on 10 South, the nurses at Beacon Health System infusion center, and the caregivers at Great Lakes Caring Hospice. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. on Monday, July 11th in the Zahoran Funeral Home, 1826 Kemble Avenue. There will also be a one hour visitation before the church service on Tuesday at West Side Church of Christ 22987 W. Edison Rd. South Bend, IN 46628. Funeral Services will be celebrated at 11:00am Tuesday at the West Side Church of Christ. Cremation will follow. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the West Side Church of Christ or Great Lakes Caring Hospice.
